Charles Babbage
was a polymath and inventor who designed several mechanical computers that were never completed due to lack of funding or technical difficulties. His most famous machines were the Difference Engine , which could calculate polynomial functions , and the Analytical Engine , which could perform general computations . He is regarded as one of the precursors of modern computing.
